Nintendo Co. (7974), a manufacturer of game consoles that gets a third of its sales in Europe, fell 2.9 percent in Osaka. James Hardie Industries SE (JHX), an Australian supplier of building materials that gets more than half of its sales from the U.S., dropped 1 percent in Sydney. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP), the world’s biggest mining company, was the second-biggest drag on the Asian gauge as it fell 1 percent on lower metal prices. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. may be active when the Hong Kong and Shanghai markets open as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. was said to sell a $2.5 billion stake at a discount.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index (MXAP) declined 0.8 percent to 124.09 as of 9:34 a.m. in Tokyo after rallying through the last two days of last week. More than 10 shares retreated for each that rose. The index pared its gains to 9.8 percent this year through April 13 amid signs China’s economy is slowing, damping the outlook for demand in the world’s second-biggest economy.
“Concern is mounting about the Spanish bond sales this week, with yields rising and credit-default swaps extending a record,” said Toshiyuki Kanayama, a market analyst at Tokyo- based Monex Inc. “Financial shares may be sold following the European market, and export-related shares may also face headwinds as the euro has dropped against the yen.”
Japan’s Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 1.5 percent with trading volume 30 percent below the 30-day average for the time of day. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index sank 0.7 percent, while South Korea’s Kospi Index retreated 1.1 percent.
